About James P. Cramer

James P. Cramer, a 1969 graduate of Northern State College, is the former CEO of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Washington, D.C., and a faculty lecturer at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he teaches the popular course Entrepreneurship in Professional Practice.

Cramer believes that design is, at its core, about discovery—solving problems with new tools and techniques. He stresses the importance of lifelong learning and argues that organizations that integrate learning into daily routines make a smart, long-term investment in their success.

A strong advocate for the undergraduate and graduate programs at Northern State University, Cramer highlights the institution’s fresh thinking and mentorship. After his distinguished career at AIA, Cramer founded the Design Futures Council and its journal, Design Intelligence. He has served as a governor, regent, director, or equity board member for nearly a dozen leading design firms worldwide. In addition, he is the former publisher of Architecture Magazine and Architectural Technology, and the longest-serving member of the AIA Executive Board, with more than 12 years of service.

Cramer is the author of seven books and dozens of magazine articles. His acclaimed works include How Firms Succeed, Lessons from the Future, and Design + Enterprise. His bestseller The Next Architect is used in firms and schools globally. His most recent book, Small Firm Success, explores how smaller firms can thrive in an age of acceleration, offering case studies that prove small firms can prosper despite geographic or resource limitations. The book emphasizes the importance of strong management for long-term success—a theme that permeates the work of the Cramer Center, which fosters innovation through networking and disciplined strategic planning.

The Cramer Center Library’s advisory board and panelists play a crucial role in shaping the vision and direction of our library’s services and initiatives. Committed to supporting academic excellence and community engagement, these individuals provide invaluable guidance and advocacy, helping to ensure the library remains a dynamic resource for learning and discovery. Their leadership and generosity help create a lasting impact on the Northern State University community.
